Chemical lure for the Japanese honeybee 日本蜜蜂(にほんみつばち / mitsubachi), ink, paper, and Japanese honeybee honey

Developed during the ARCUS Project residency in Moriya, Ibaraki, Japan (the longest-running international artist residency in the country) this project marks the beginning of a new body of work. The image shown here is part of the initial studio documentation. More to come.

A scientifically synthesized attractant for the Japanese honeybee is modelled after the Kinrohen orchid, a flower that offers no nectar or pollen. The lure remains effective for 45 days. The bee is drawn in, pollinating the flower, but receives nothing in return. The lure works invisibly. A scent. A signal. A mimicry. Pollination by deception.

Sometimes the body responds before the mind catches up. Even when the reward ultimately leaves us feeling empty, we might return, pulled by pattern, memory, and desire. The bee can’t see the trick. But even when we do, how do we break the spell?

I’ve been thinking about luring, desire, and the nature of longing. The moon pulls at the body of the Earth. Desire moves like a tide attracting, receding, returning. A cycle to break, or begin again.
