On Vancouver Island and elsewhere, the mining industry exploited mules, like canaries and people. These strong animals hauled heavy loads through dark, narrow tunnels, enduring gruelling conditions.

Often kept underground for long hours, some mules rarely saw daylight. Overworked and underfed, the mules received minimal care. Injuries were common, and many did not survive the brutal conditions.
