Westslope Cutthroat Trout (a canary in the coal mine)
Critical habitat for the westslope cutthroat trout lies within in the proposed Grassy Mountain Coal Project footprint. These fish are just one of the many species at risk threatened by open-pit coal mining in Alberta. Deformities found in and population decline of the westslope cutthroat trout in rivers and creeks near Teck Resources’ Elk Valley coal mining operations serve as a warning of the devastating impacts that open-pit coal mining will bring to southwestern Alberta.
Participants are invited to take a piece of charcoal and rub the an invisible drawing to reveal and complete it. The drawings can be taken when participants leave the gallery as a way to connect to the fish, Grassy Mountain, and the Crowsnest River Watershed.
