Plant Walks with Latifa Pelletier-Ahmed
Since 2016, I have been working with herbalist, botanist, and educator Latifa Pelletier-Ahmed, owner of Latifa's Herbs and co-owner of ALCLA Native Plants to develop plant walks in downtown Mohkinstsis (Calgary). On the walks, we look at plants, many known as weeds, that are often overlooked in urban environments. We discuss how to identify plants using principals of botany and our senses, including touch and smell. Participants learn about the edible and medicinal properties of the plants and what plants teach us about the environments that they grow in. Together, we have facilitated a number of walks in conjunction with the City of Calgary's Public Art Program (2016, 2020) including Weed Notice!. Here you will find documentation of the walks. For the 2020 edition was held in conjunction with an exhibition of Essential Oils (for Alberta) at the City of Calgary's Public Art program Open Spaces windows exhibition space at the Centre St LRT Platform.
