The Detroit River is a powerful symbol for diasporic Africans. It was a portal of freedom for slaves on both sides. Many lives were transformed by its crossing. Wade in the Water was a code song. Enslaved people trying to escape heard it as a warning to stay in the water away from slave hunters with bloodhounds.
